Preparation for Surgery
You will receive a phone call the day before your procedure and be given an arrival time for surgery. Please make sure to supply us with a working phone number where you may be reached.
Do not eat or drink any food or liquid after midnight the night before your surgery, unless given specific directions otherwise. A nurse will tell you which medications to take, if any, with a small sip of water. Failure to follow eating and drinking restrictions could increase the risk of complications and lead to cancellation of your surgery.
To reduce bacteria on your skin:
- Bathe or shower before arriving.
- Do not apply lotion or hair spray.
- Do not shave your surgical site at home prior to surgery, unless instructed to do so.
- Do not wear makeup, jewelry (including body piercings), watches, earrings, or rings. If you refuse to remove body piercings, there is a possibility your surgery may be cancelled.
- Wear loose comfortable clothes.
- If you were required to do a bowel prep and you still have dark or formed stool, please call us at 850-718-2554 or 850-718-2540.
- You will be required to have someone over the age of 18 with you on your day of surgery. This person is to remain during the procedure. You must arrange to have someone drive you home after surgery.
- You are advised to have someone stay with you at home for 24 hours after surgery.
Special Instructions for Children
- Children preparing for surgery require special attention. Parents should be aware of dietary restrictions and make sure children follow them exactly, especially the morning of surgery.
- Patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian on the day of surgery or for any required pre-admissions during the surgical process. A legal guardian of a child having surgery must present a copy of your power of attorney or legal guardianship.
- It is reassuring for children to have a favorite small toy or familiar item from home with them.
In Case of Cancellation
If you develop a cold, fever, persistent cough, infection, and/or become ill within 48 hours of your surgery or need to cancel for any reason, call your surgeon or the Surgery department at 850-718-2554 or 850-718-2540.

- Enter the main entrance into the hospital. Notify the registration desk of your surgery appointment. Then have a seat in the front lobby and a surgery staff member will come to get you.
- You will go to the Outpatient Surgery area where you will be given an assigned room. You will change into a hospital gown and be provided slippers. Do not wear your contact lenses, but you may wear your glasses. If you wear dentures, we may need to remove them before surgery.
- Your family member or guest may wait in the room with you. We ask for only two guests in the room at a time.
- You will be interviewed and may be examined by the surgical team. Often, these questions may have been asked before. Please be patient with our process as we are working together to ensure the safest and most thorough surgical course for you. Be sure to ask any questions you may have.
- Patients going to the operating room will receive intravenous (IV) fluids.
Operating Room
- You will be taken to the operating room (OR) or procedural area on a stretcher/bed. You will be accompanied by a registered nurse. who will stay with you during your entire surgical procedure.
- Once you arrive in the OR, one of our team members will help you move onto an OR bed. You will notice lights over your head, and the room will probably feel cool. You will be provided a warm blanket. The staff will be dressed in scrubs, hats and masks. Your nurse and anesthesia provider will explain everything to you and they will remain with you during surgery.
- During surgery your family will be updated by the nurse on the progress of the surgery.
After Surgery
- You will go to the recovery room, also known as the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). You will be monitored until most of the effects of the anesthesia subsides.
- Although some pain can be expected as your body responds to surgery, your nurse and physician will work closely with you to provide medications to reduce your pain. Because each patient and his or her pain experience is different, it is important to let your nurse know about any pain you have.
- After you have recovered in the PACU, you will be moved back to the Outpatient Surgery area. You may or may not go into the same room you were in before surgery. Your family member or guest may join you. If you are to be admitted overnight, you will go to the PACU, then be transported to a patient room, and your family will be notified.
Discharge
- When you are ready for discharge, a nurse will review the instructions specific to your surgery and anesthesia type. A written copy will be given to you. Feel free to ask any questions prior to your discharge.
- Do not drive, operate machinery, drink alcohol, or make any major decisions for at least 24 hours.
