Occupational Therapy evaluates and treats clients on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Occupational Therapy uses creative and innovative methods to provide our patients with the care needed so that they may return to their maximum functional level of independence. The Occupational Therapy program at Jackson Hospital offers a wide variety of comprehensive services. Occupational Therapy provides programs for those in need of upper /lower extremity rehabilitation to enhance activities of daily living skills, work and leisure and play. Occupational Therapy also enhances development, prevents disability and adapts everyday simple tasks.

How long does it take?
Inpatient—Initial Evaluations/Treatment varies upon patient status.
Outpatient—Initial evaluations typically take approximately 1 hour. Treatments typically take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour (time is determined by your therapist).

What can I do to make it a success?
- Be on time for your scheduled appointment.
- Make sure to bring a care giver/significant other to relay information or drive you, if necessary.
- Bring your doctor’s referral, photo ID and all insurance cards when registering for your new evaluation.
- Bring all medications or a list of your medications you are currently taking.
- Bring all medical records that pertain to your diagnosis for which you are being seen for, if available.
- Take pain medication approximately 30 minutes prior to the initial evaluation.
- Wear comfortable clothing.
What should I do before your exam?
No preparation is needed for an Occupational Therapy Evaluation.
What happens during your exam?
The Occupational Therapist will assess your range of motion, strength, edema, coordination skills, sensory and functional skills. He/she will use skilled observations, standardized testing and patient/family reports according to your diagnosis. The therapist will then form a plan of care based on the findings of your evaluation and develop long term and short term goals. The therapist will educate the patient on a home exercise program and answer any questions that the patient may have regarding initial evaluation.
What happens after the exam?
The Occupational Therapist will determine the number of necessary treatments and frequency based on your prescription from your doctor. The patient will then have the opportunity to schedule follow up treatment with our staff. It is necessary to show functional gains with any therapy program in order for your payer source (insurance) to cover your occupational therapy services. Compliance with all treatments, home exercise programs and visits is vital part to making your occupational therapy program a success.
You cannot receive outpatient occupational therapy services and home health services at the same time.
